English as a Second Language Program
English As A Second Language Program
When parents enroll their students, they are asked to complete a Home Language Survey. This federally-mandated document provides information about any languages spoken by the student at his/her home. Suppose any of the answers to the survey show a language other than English. In that case, the student must be tested using the NC State Language Proficiency Tests to determine eligibility for the English as a Second (ESL) Language Program.
After the students are assessed for listening, reading, writing, and speaking (in English), they will then receive ESL services if they qualify for the program.
The ESL program provides English language instruction for students (Intensive, Supportive, or Transitional). These services focus on the academic and language acquisition needs of the MLs. All ESL teachers are certified. Students are tested annually using the ACCESS Language Proficiency Tests as mandated by Federal Law.
It is important that Multilingual Learners receive the same academic opportunities as students who are proficient in English. Teachers of students who are Multilingual Learners must modify their instruction and assessment to meet their needs.
Sampson County Schools is committed to the success of all students and their parents.
