Meet the Superintendent

Dr. King

Dr. King has enjoyed a long and very successful career spanning more than twenty years in public education with Guilford County Schools (GCS), the 47th largest school district in the nation. Since 2021, he has served as a regional superintendent, supervising eleven middle schools. Prior to becoming regional superintendent, Dr. King served as an assistant superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development (TLPD), where he supervised the curriculum, content, and professional development that is delivered to approximately 70,000 students and nearly 10,000 staff members.

Other roles included serving as a middle school principal, a middle college principal which served students that had previously dropped out of school or that had the desire to drop out of school, and a high school assistant principal. Additionally, he has worked as an educational consultant, where he traveled to different school districts throughout the country and trained staff on instructional technology. He began his career in 2002 as a math and science teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dr. King has an impressive academic background as well. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a double degree in Biology and Athletic Training.  He earned his Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Doctorate in Education from High Point University.

"There is no greater more important role than that of an educator as we continue to pave the way forward, establishing a positive culture of teaching and learning that addresses the needs of all students. With highly committed school staff and a supportive community, we can ensure that all students achieve their individual potential,” said King.

Dr. King looks forward to the opportunity to lead Sampson County Schools and to become an active member of the community. He and his wife have three daughters and three dogs and they love spending time outdoors.

S-PAC: Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council

The Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council (S-PAC) is made up of at least one designated parent representative from each school in Sampson County Schools. However, all interested parents are welcome to join the council or to attend the council's meetings. S-PAC members should understand the importance of representing their individual school and themselves as an individual parent advocating for his or her child.

Each school in Sampson County Schools hosts its own building-level parent advisory group. To learn more about your school's parent advisory process, consult your child's principal. School-specific topics and concerns are addressed at these building-level parent council meetings, whereas the Superintendent's  Parent Advisory Council addresses district-wide concerns and topics.

Sampson County Schools parents interested in joining the S-PAC council may contact their child's school principal or contact the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council facilitator, Valerie Newton at Email Valerie Newton
