At the April 22 Sampson County Schools' Board of Education monthly board meeting, the following students and staff spotlighted and recognized:
Welcome from Roseboro Elementary School -
Perla Alonso-Valenzuela, 5th grade student at Roseboro Elementary School welcomed the SCS Board members to the Lakewood District at Salemburg Elementary School.
Sampson County's CTE nominee for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) CTE Teacher of the Year Award -
Vernon Blackman, automotive technology teacher at Midway High School will represent Sampson County, competing against other CTE teachers from across the state for the title of NCCAT CTE Teacher of the Year. The NCCAT CTE Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor and retain excellent CTE teachers and education leaders in North Carolina public schools and public charter schools.
NCCAT CTE TOY Eligibility Requirements:
Nomination by your school district or charter.
Successful completion of at least 5 years of teaching in a NC public school.
Employed full time as a CTE teacher during nomination year.
Must teach students directly for at least 70% of the time.
The winner will be announced on June 12, 2024 from NCCAT.
NC FFA Ag Sales and Farm Business Management teams -
The Lakewood High School FFA Agricultural Sales team placed 12th in the state, 2nd in the Southeast Region, and 1st in the Sampson Federation. Team members included Danica Carter, Kenley Cannady, Luanna Sessoms, and Julian Smith. Kenley Cannady was the team's highest-scoring individual, placing 24th out of 103 participants.
The Lakewood High School FFA Farm Business Management team placed 17th in the state, 3rd in the Southeast Regions, and 2nd in the Sampson Federation. Team members included Joshua Hobbs, Luis Tinoco, Lela Pell, and Preston Young. Lela Pell was the team's highest-scoring individual, placing 8th out of 131 participants.
The advisors for both teams are Chris Hicks and Jessy Glenn.
FFA Hunter Safety -
The Lakewood High School FFA Hunter Safety team competed at the District 4 Hunter Safety Tournament and took home 3rd place overall in the Archery Senior Division. The team members are Landyn Carter, Derek Ezzell, Colby Gray, Jillian Smith, and Connor Tatum. The advisor is Chris Hicks.
The Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School FFA team competed in the junior division of the regional youth hunter education safety tournament and placed 3rd overall in the junior division hunter skills category for written/tested knowledge of wildlife hunter regulations information. The team members are Landon Faircloth, Stevann Faircloth, Corbin Reach, Chance Sessoms, Jace Smith, and Bill Tarplee. Chance Sessoms placed 4th overall individually for the entire junior division. The team advisor is Chris Hicks (LHS).
