Mrs. Davis' 4th graders recently participated in an experiment called "Elephant Toothpaste." The experiment allowed them to demonstrate a chemical change happening when substances are added together. Prior to the experiment, students studied chemical vs. physical change and discussed the meaning of both changes. After watching a segment on Generation Genius, students also learned that when chemical change happens, an entirely new substance forms. With a physical change, a new substance is not formed.
