Throughout the country, a growing number of students are turning to negative coping methods-including vaping with THC. Schools across North Carolina are also reporting more sophisticated cyberbullying, pornography, smoking, drinking, and risk-taking/defiant behavior. All of this is a student's way of calling out for help.

Ms. Sawvel's book, Under the Influence: The Town That Listened to Its Kids provides a guideline for a community to address the issues of vaping, teenage drinking, drug abuse and other destructive behaviors. The book clearly shows how it takes both youth & adults to address these issues. Youth need to know adults care about them as individuals. Youth need to know how to utilize peer relationships in a positive way. Adults need to know that youth want to do what is right. This book describes the process of bringing everyone on board to address the issues. It is a book with facts but also with heart. It is both a resource and motivational book.

Officer Douglass will demonstrate various vape devices that have been collected in SCS, talk about the harmful (and unknown) ingredients found in vapes, and give parents and caregivers an opportunity to participate in hands-on testing of vapes for illegal substances.

*This workshop is for adults only and not intended for children.
